Our main mission at GPRA is to find the right permanent home for Great Pyrenees in distress, whether they are strays or from an overpopulated kill or no-kill shelter. We don’t care how old they are or what their medical condition is because we will make sure they receive a comprehensive medical evaluation, spaying or neutering, and even behavioral training if necessary.

Hey! How are you? I am gentle giant Howie! This is what GPRA knows about me.
“Howie is a sweet boy. He loves to cuddle and is curious and smart.”
“Howie loves children.” (Yes, I am easy-going, and kids are lots of fun!)
“Howie is good with other dogs.” (Actually, I will be happiest if there is another dog in my future home as I love having a buddy!)
“Howie knows commands such as ‘sit,’ ‘stay,’ ‘come,’ ‘off,’ and ‘down.’ (Yes, I know the commands. But, like most Pyrs, I might be a bit lazy remembering.)
“Howie loves car rides.” (Yep, this is on the top of my favorites list.)
You see, there are many great things to love about me.
Oh, two more things, please never crate me because it is my biggest fear. And, when you leave the house, I’m a very good boy and will be just fine hanging out with my fur-friend waiting to greet you.
Your faithful gentle giant, Howie

Hi there! I am Bella White! Do you like my cute smile? Even though I had to say goodbye to my previous owner due to an illness, which was quite sad, GPRA tells me that a new life awaits and I can smile again.
Here is what my foster mom knows about me.
“Bella White is a sweetheart! She seems to have been quite sheltered and lacks exposure to everyday things. However, she is gaining confidence each day. Bella White will benefit from a patient, loving and understanding owner who will continue to introduce her to normal routines.”
“Bella White loves to be close to her humans, and she is a natural snuggler. She must have snuggled a lot with her previous owner.” (I have perfected quiet snuggle time.)
“When Bella White gets excited, you see her adorable toothy smile, and she will trot around wagging her tail in a circle. Bella White is a fun, lovey girl.”
“She can be a bit nervous on the leash due to lack of exposure and tries to bolt when startled. Bella White will need a patient owner who will continue to build her confidence.” (If you need a walking buddy, I’m your girl because GPRA’s vet recommends that I drop a few pounds. Did you notice my little pot belly? However, if you want to sneak me a few treats every once in a while, I promise not to tell anyone. Also, if I see a deer on walks, I can get a bit excited, so be prepared to work on my leash manners. Yes, this is my work in progress.)
“Bella White is house-trained and will go to the door when she needs to go outside.” (I’m a good girl!)
“Bella White will be an excellent companion to a retired owner or couple who do not have younger children or hyper young dogs.” (Previously, I lived a tranquil and calm life. It will take me time to get used to a busier home. No worries, I will figure things out.)
“Bella White’s favorite things are snuggles, chicken, a cozy place to hide when she gets scared, and a comfy bed.” (Don’t forget that I love to snuggle on the couch. Will you be my couch buddy?)
Pyrly yours, Bella White

Good day! I’m your steadfast, reliable, and gentle giant, Fred.

I was rescued with my sister from an abusive and bad situation. I will spare you the details, but our living conditions were miserable.

Thankfully, GPRA came to our rescue. My sister already found her family, and I’m Pyr-happy for her. The last step in my journey to fur-ever is finding my family. Lucky for me, I have been with an incredible foster home, so I am now ready for my very own humans, home, and comfy dog bed.

Here are a few things that my foster family has learned about me.
“Fred is the best. He is laid-back, cautious, fairly quiet, and very easy-going. Fred’s trust and confidence grow each day.” (Yes, my Pyr-confidence is returning.)

“Fred is house-trained. He will stand by the door or by his humans when he needs to go outside.” (Yes, I am learning good house manners from my foster parents!)

“Fred is very docile and the sweetest boy. His personality will continue to blossom.” (Yes, it takes time to trust when other humans have mistreated you, but I’m starting to believe that everything is going to be okay.)

“Thunder scares Fred.” (Yes, I do not like those loud noises. As long as I have a safe hideaway, I will be just fine.)

“For being mistreated, it has been heartwarming to see Fred’s personality begin to shine through. He loves attention. Lots of petting and scratching will help to build his trust.” (Thank you for helping me on my way!)

Pyrly grateful, Fred

Hi, I’m Tundra, a  7 yr old, 108 lb boy who just rolled in to GPRA! I hear the humans say that I am very sweet and submissive. I know all kinds of great manners for the house and I definitely do not like those vacuum cleaner things. Sheesh, they are scary. I’m also know what to do when a human says “sit”, “stay”, or “down” and I don’t guard my food. It’s OK if you have to reach in and move my bowl, I don’t get mad. I love a good comfy sofa and love chilling with my people. I like cats and dogs that are mellow, like I am. I came to GPRA because the other dogs in the house liked to be the boss and they were picking on me. I didn’t like to fight back so I just barked at them…a lot. That wasn’t working out so well in the neighborhood so they thought I might find a family where I’d be a super happy guy.  I’ll ask my GPRA foster for more information to share with you but in the meantime can you please email info@greatpyratlanta.com or click either “Contact Us” or “Apply to Adopt” below to help me get closer to my forever home?

Hi, my name is Gareth.  I am a special and loving boy around the age of 7.  I have a special gait that is causing some discomfort when I walk.  My rear left knee cap is positioned rather odd.  But that is okay, GPRA is making me all better so that I can move around without any pain or discomfort.  I want my very own family who will love me and show me the love that I want to give in return.  I love to take walks and enjoy being around doggie companions too.  The staff that is taking care of me have nicknamed me “Harry Potter” because of the scars over my eye.  If you have the time to invest in me while I take this journey back to health, I promise to repay you with unconditional love.  Contact GPRA today for more information at info@greatpyratlanta.com.
